Russia is a vast, transcontinental country, stretching from Eastern Europe all the way across Asia to the Pacific Ocean. Its vastness is a legacy of its Tsarist imperialist era, when it colonised much of northern Asia just as other European powers were snatching up other parts of the world. Russia is famous for being the location of the Russian Revolution, and it was the largest and most powerful constituent country of the USSR. After the USSR’s collapse, Russia went through a period of traumatic economic crisis before Vladimir Putin, an authoritarian, conservative nationalist, came to power.
