Italy
Italy is one of the largest countries in southern Europe, occupying the Italian peninsula and a stretch of land north of there, reaching the Alps. The land is known as the heartland of Ancient Rome (the city of Rome itself, of course, being the capital of Italy today), but it spent most of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance as a collection of often-feuding principalities and small republics before unifying in the mid-19th century.
