Afghanistan is a small, underdeveloped country straddling the boundary of Central and South Asia. Its two major languages are Dari (a variety of Persian) and Pashto, with roughly equal proportions of the population speaking each one. Afghanistan has been beset by war for most of the time since 1979, initially invaded by the Soviets and in 2001 by the US and its allies, including Australia. After 20 years of war, the Taliban retook control of Kabul in dramatic fashion in 2021.
