Link: “How Socialists Should Think About National Independence Struggles

Original post found at: https://jacobin.com/2022/08/marxism-nationalism-scotland-ireland/

Really interesting article (at least, I found it so) about what Marx, Engels, and subsequent socialists have thought about nationalism, and national independence struggles more restrictedly, using Scotland as its particular focus. Overall I think it echoes what I thought myself, which is that such struggles (particularly in non-oppressed, non-colonised nations like Scotland) should be evaluated on the basis of how much they challenge capitalism, or the capitalist order. On that basis, I’ve always had sympathy for the Scottish independence movement and this article suggests to me that I’ve been right (and clearly that’s what makes for a great article 😜).
