Link: “NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet wants to shake up school hours — this is what it could look like”
If there’s one thing that really annoys me (jk, there are many things that annoy me, but still) it’s this idea that school is literally nothing but glorified daycare. During the pandemic-related lockdowns the media gave hours collectively to breathless idiots insisting this exact thing, and now Dominic Perottet wants to join in on the act by extending school hours? I mean, from where are teachers going to magic up the extra few hours every day to plan and teach an entire two extra hours of lessons? His state is already on track to run out of teachers within a few years, and this is his brilliant plan?
More interesting in the article was that the only examples of schools they’ve found who do have non-standard hours actually made their school days shorter. Making the very sensible point that by the last couple of hours, everyone is too tired for high-quality learning to go on, so might as well just go home for lunch and not come back till tomorrow. I would have loved an 8am–1:15pm daily schedule, omg.
